Man Proposes At Time Square And Drops Ring Through Grate

OOPS! Man Drops Engagement Ring Down Grate Near Times Square

The New York Police Department's Fellowship of the Engagement Ring succeeded where others might have failed.

According to a post on the department's Twitter account, they've located the couple who was spotted on CCTV cameras fumbling with an engagement ring that got lost in the bowels of a sidewalk grate in New York's Times Square.

On Sunday, online sleuths managed to put together the clues and alert the police to the owners of the lost ring - a couple from England identified by the NYPD as John and Daniella.

After the couple was found, the story of the fumbled engagement ring became a bit more clear. John proposed to Daniella earlier that day in Central Park, according to an article from the New York Times, but the ring had been too small, and slipped off the woman's finger Friday night and into the grate.

New York police noticed the couple looking for the ring on CCTV cameras Friday night. Video showed the would-be groom attempting to retrieve the ring from the sidewalk grate, but he was unsuccessful. The pair tried reporting their lost ring to officers for help, but they weren't able to retrieve it either, and the couple returned home, unaware that their story was currently going viral, thanks to the NYPD Twitter account.

"We would like to thank everyone who shared this story!" the department wrote on their Twitter page. "The (now) happy couple is back in their home country, but thanks to your retweets they heard we were looking for them! We're making arrangements to get them their ring back. Congratulations!"
