Tuesday night a locomotive and a few cars of the freight train went off the tracks, which run beneath 28th Street SW just east of US-131. Two railroad employees were injured in the incident, one of which was taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Two engines pulling a northbound train overturned when they reached a section of track that was washed out due to heavy rain and snow melt. City workers had a backhoe and other equipment at the scene to dig the train free.
The derailment caused an unknown amount of fuel to spill from the engine, which was contained by emergency and cleanup crews. No chemicals or cargo were spilled in the incident.
The derailment happened around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday night. Both directions of 28th Street were closed between US-131 and Buchanan Avenue SW.
The derailed cars stretched as far south as 32nd Street.
