In Allegan County's Watson Township a mass of underground peat has been burning all this year, filling the local neighborhood with smoke that one neighbor says has given her headaches and a cough.

The farmer whose bog is burning was unable to get help from the fire department and can not put the smoldering peat out himself.

One woman told WOOD TV she called the state's Department of Environmental Quality which issues those Air Action Day alerts every summer but was told the DEQ would not help, either.

The farmer hopes to hire a bog fire expert.
