The mother of the man charged with murdering Michigan State Police Trooper Paul Butterfield in Mason County, has been arrested.

The Mason County Press reports Tammi Spofford, the mother of Eric Knysz, has been arrested and awaits charges.

Mason County Prosecutor Paul Spaniola would not confirm the arrest Monday saying only that he will issue a news release Tuesday morning.

Published reports stating in testimony November 5 in Mason County Circuit Court, Eric Knysz’s wife, Sarah Knysz, intimated that Spofford played a role in the Knyszes’ theft of a car shortly after Eric Knysz allegedly shot Butterfield.

The 43 year old Butterfield was killed September 9 after being shot while conducting a traffic stop in Mason County.

Eric Knysz will stand trial in Mason County on charges of murdering a peace officer, felony firearm, concealed weapons violation, unlawfully driving away an auto, and being a habitual offender. He faces up to life in prison.
