Gale warnings are in effect for Lake Michigan and Lake Superior as forecasters warn of hazardous conditions along the shoreline.

The National Weather Service says the warnings are in effect into Monday afternoon, with waves of 14 feet to 20 feet in parts of Lake Michigan. Warnings also were issued for the eastern and middle part of Lake Superior, with waves of 8 feet to 12 feet possible.

Forecasters are warning those on the water without experience and equipment for such conditions to head to a safe harbor.

Winds have gusted nearly 40 mph across West Michigan Monday morning, leading to additional power outages, even affecting traffic lights during the morning commute.
