Delta Airlines, a major carrier flying out of the Grand Rapids airport, said it's avoiding Ukrainian airspace in response to the Malaysia Airlines crash.

"Out of an abundance of caution, Delta is not routing flights through Ukrainian airspace and is monitoring the situation involving Malaysia Airlines Flight 17," the company said Thursday.

The flight with 295 people on board went down Thursday, leaving a debris field several miles long.

Details on the situation remain fluid. White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters Thursday it was too early to make any assessments.

"I know that there are a number of reports speculating about the possible cause, but I'm not in a position to confirm any details at this point," he said.

Delta is one of the five major carriers flying out of Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

"The thoughts and prayers of the entire Delta Air Lines family are with the passengers and crew, and their loved ones, involved in the Malaysia Airlines incident today," it said.
