Efforts to restore the more than 250-year-old DeZwaan windmill in southwestern Michigan are getting a $375,000 boost from the state.
The Holland Sentinel reports the Michigan Economic Development Commission approved grant money to help pay for the ongoing work at Windmill Island Gardens in Holland. Mayor Kurt Dykstra says the windmill is a ``unique asset'' for Michigan.
A fundraising campaign for work including the windmill repairs has a $2.1 million goal. The grant boosts the amount raised to about $820,000, with most coming from private sources. The city and Holland Township have agreed to contribute another $600,000 over the next six years.
The windmill restoration is expected to be finished this year. Other work includes repairs to the gardens' antique carousel and street organ.
