Local historians say beer is being brewed commercially in downtown Muskegon for the first time since 1957.

Published reports say the Unruly Brewing Co. is making local craft beer in the basement of the Russell Block Market.

Head brew master Eric Hoffman has begun testing the brewing system and has put six batches through the production process. Owners plan to open their tasting room by the end of November.

The last beer to be commercially brewed in downtown Muskegon was at the Muskegon Brewing Co. building that is now home to frozen garlic bread-maker Cole's Quality Foods.

Local historians say the Grand Rapids Brewery bottled in that location from 1935 to 1946, and Goebel Beer was made there from 1946 to 1957.
